It commands a view of the Los Angeles Basin, including Downtown Los Angeles to the southeast, Hollywood to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the southwest. The observatory is a popular tourist attraction with an extensive array of space and science-related displays. 3,015 acres (12.20 km2) of land surrounding the observatory was donated to the City of Los Angeles by Colonel Griffith J. Griffith on December 16, 1896.[1] In his will Griffith donated funds to build an observatory, exhibit hall, and planetarium on the donated land. Griffith's objective was to make astronomy accessible by the public, as opposed to the prevailing idea that observatories should be located on remote mountaintops and restricted to scientists.[2] Griffith drafted detailed specifications for the observatory. In drafting the plans, he consulted with Walter Adams, the future director of Mount Wilson Observatory, and George Ellery Hale, who founded (with Andrew Carnegie) the first astrophysical telescope in Los Angeles.[2] As a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project,[3] construction began on June 20, 1933, using a design developed by architect John C. Austin based on preliminary sketches by Russell W. Porter.[1] The observatory and accompanying exhibits were opened to the public on May 14, 1935. In its first five days of operation the observatory logged more than 13,000 visitors. Dinsmore Alter was the museum's director during its first years; today, Dr. Ed Krupp is the director of the Observatory. From the Georgian period estates of houses were constructed above the town centre. The maritime connections of Greenwich were celebrated in the 20th century, with the siting of the Cutty Sark and Gipsy Moth IV next to the river front, and the National Maritime Museum in the former buildings of the Royal Hospital School in 1934. Greenwich formed part of Kent until 1889 when the County of London was created.

You’d be hard pressed to find a cooler neighborhood than Observatory Park in Denver. It’s one of Denver’s oldest and most prestigious neighborhoods, with stunning homes, wide streets, mountain views, and towering trees and even a historic observatory in the neighborhood’s central green (hence the name). It’s adjacent to the University of Denver and just a hop and a skip to downtown (the University Station Light Rail is right there), the Tech Center, and Colorado Boulevard corridor. It’s the ideal set up. And right in the middle of all this awesomeness is Modera Observatory Park, 275 brand-new apartments that are a true study in modern living. Spread out between two very cool buildings right at the gateway to our namesake neighborhood, our community is five stories of pure gorgeousness, impeccably designed with an organic aesthetic that’s the perfect blend of low-key and high-style. When we started construction, we realized pretty quickly that the elevation of our buildings offer city and mountain views beginning on the second floor (and believe us, the views only get better as you work your way up to the rooftop deck). And we were stoked. There’s a reason the Rocky Mountains are the stuff of songs and poems. You may even be inspired to write a few of your own. How do you view? Very well at Modera Observatory Park, thank you. Inside, the apartments are equally as double-take worthy, loaded to the gills with fixtures and finishes that are easy on the eye and nice to the touch. Open and bright, each home offers everything you would expect in a luxe apartment: custom cabinets, quartz counters, eco-friendly flooring and stainless appliances. We’re pretty excited about what we’ve done to the place. Our amenity line-up is a perfect reflection of our hometown of Denver. Let's refer you back to the aforementioned rooftop deck, with panoramic mountain and city views; the perfect place to unwind after your daily grind with a chilly microbrew. The expanse of the mountains and city is the ultimate charging station. Other niceties include cool social hubs with free wi-fi (work from home day, yes please!), coffee bar, pet spa and a great parking situation. When you’re ready to change up your view, make sure Modera Observatory Park makes your short list. Get on the VIP list for early summer move in's. OBSERVATORY PARK In 1899 the Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory was built as part of an international project to measure the earth's wobble on its polar axis. The park was thoughtfully constructed to reflect the science that took place there. An ellipse representing the Earth’s motion is created between the observatory and the meridian pier, denoted by benches and landscaping. The path itself, when viewed from above, represents the Earth’s wobble. The City of Gaithersburg and five other cities around the globe are linked by a unique scientific endeavor that began more than 100 years ago. They are all home to latitude observatories which tracked the wobble of the Earth on its polar axis through star readings to aid in navigation. Other observatories can be found in Cincinnati, Ohio; Ukiah, California; Mizusawa, Japan; Kitab, Uzbekistan; and Caligari, Sardinia, Italy. The Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory operated from 1899 to 1982, when satellites replaced human observers. It is still active, however, with GPS systems using survey markers installed on these grounds to make periodic course corrections. Fully restored in the 1980's, the observatory building, the meridian mark pier, and the five geodetic monuments scattered throughout the park are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Gaithersburg Observatory and five others in Japan, Italy, Russia and the United States gathered information that is still used by scientists today, along with information obtained from satellites, to determine polar motion; the size, shape, and physical properties of the earth; and to aid the space program through the precise navigational patterns of orbiting satellites. The Gaithersburg station operated until 1982 when computerization rendered the manual observation obsolete. Observatory Park 100 DeSellum Avenue 301-258-6350 gaithersburgmd.gov
